"In 2006 my Brother and I opened an Italian Wood fired Pizza Restaurant in Bargo called “The Local Italian”.  Within the Kitchen my mum, Franca Cece, is the Head Chef.  Mum’s duties were plentiful including making traditional handmade pasta’s and cakes.  Even though mum was extremely busy she still managed, somehow, to fit in time to make Limoncello.  The recipe was passed on to her and had been in the family for generations.  Our clients loved mum’s cooking and after filling their bellies with her homemade Gnocchi, succulent Goat and homemade Tiramisu  there was only one thing left to top it off, mum’s Limoncello.  Mum handed out Limoncello in shot glasses to all clients at the end of their meals and she always admired their facial expressions after tasting it.  Clients begged mum to sell the Limoncello to them to take home but, since it was against the law, mum refused.  After watching this happen night after night for a year, I couldn’t help but think that there truly was a market for this liquid gold.  I began helping mum make the Limoncello and soon mastered the art. The Drayton’s are one of the Hunter Valley’s pioneering winemaking families and it is one of the few companies that are still family owned and operated. It has been over one hundred and fifty years since the first Drayton trod on rich Hunter Valley soil. That Drayton was Joseph Drayton. Joseph was born in 1825 at Lincolnshire in England and at the age of twenty seven set sail for Sydney with his wife, Anna, and their two small boys. Tragically Joseph lost a son, a new born daughter and his wife during the voyage.
The family enterprise, originally started by Joseph Drayton, more than 150 years ago is now in the hands of Max Drayton and his two sons John, and Greg. Max’s 60 plus years of experience in the wine industry makes him an invaluable source of advice, not only for his sons, but also for other growers in the district. Greg has devoted his entire working life to the family company while John joined the company in 1989 after 13 years of teaching.The Drayton family is very proud of its history over six generations and the part it has played in the development of the region that is now known as “Hunter Valley Wine Country”.

Owners Lennert & Rienna de Visser combined have over 35 years in the hospitality industry, in fact it’s what brought them together their love of food. Exquisite Cakes by Lennert was originally set-up as a wholesale operation for the restaurant and hotels in the Lower Hunter Valley area. It didn’t take long before a demand for their products spread to the retail market. To meet this demand Lennert & Rienna began selling macarons at the local markets in and around the Pokolbin area which provided an opportunity for people to discuss cooking techniques and flavours that they have tried. In April 2013, Exquisite Cakes by Lennert took over the premises that was occupied by Queen of Tarts thus giving them a retail presence for any and all to visit.  Since it’s small beginnings with just Lennert in the kitchen the team has now expanded to include a full time Pastry Chef / Decorator and 2 apprentice pastry chefs, both of whom are studying at Hamilton TAFE. Hunter Belle Cheese

Hunter Belle continued to produce its quality handmade cheese, but the business quickly began growing, moving more into wholesale trade and becoming a big part of Hunter Valley tourism, but more exciting things were ahead. In 2010 Hunter Belle Café was born and this gave Hunter Belle Cheese a welcoming front door to entice the public.  Not only did this give the business the opportunity to showcase their cheese throughout a café menu, but it allowed them to begin educating the public in the dairy industry. Viewing windows into the cheese making room, maturation room and packing room, allow visitors to understand how cheese is made, while a wall mural shows the entire production line of the dairy industry. Misty Glen, located in the heart of Pokolbin, Hunter Valley, NSW, features a boutique 16 acre Vineyard, a Cellar Door and a self-contained Cottage. The vineyard produces five grape varietals; Semillon, Chardonnay, Chambourcin, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, which are created into both traditional and unusual wine styles every vintage.

The three bedroom self-contained cottage, adjacent to the vineyard, boasts a secluded private garden, pet -friendly facilities plus plenty of room for family and friends. Within minutes of restaurants, cellar doors, the Hunter Valley Gardens, several golf courses, day spas and concert venues.

ABOUT Circa 1985 a picturesque sixteen acre property with a small vineyard in dire need of reinvigoration was purchased by the Wright Family. The vineyard featured Semillon, Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon with the addition of Shiraz in 2000 and three acres of Chambourcin in 2002.

In 2009 Vicci & Eric Smith purchased the prospering Hunter Valley property and have since devoted their time and energy into the management of the property and it’s thriving Vineyard; working tirelessly to ensure fruit production of the highest quality for every vintage. 2009 also brought about the birth of Vicci and Eric’s first boutique wine and accommodation label consisting of Misty Glen Wines, Vineyard and Cottage. Featuring an impressive wine portfolio showcasing varietals grown only in the Misty Glen Vineyard, located 60 metres above sea level consisting of Sandy alluvial loams and Volcanic podsolic soils – providing perfect conditions for producing quality Hunter wines. These varietals include Semillon, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chambourcin and Shiraz from which a combination of traditional and unusual wine styles are created. The name Misty Glen came about because of its unique position; In the Autumn & Winter months you can watch the mist roll up across the flats from the Hunter River, through the back of the property and right through the vineyard. The Misty Glen Cottage is a delightful 3 bedroom, self-contained, pet friendly country cottage with a wrap-around verandah and secluded country garden. Perfect for short and long stays all year round, located within close proximity to local cellar doors, dining and unique Hunter Valley attractions. The Cellar Door, constructed in 2005, features 180 degree views of the vineyard, boasting tasting facilities for small and large groups within a friendly and welcoming setting. Seated tastings are also available from Vicci’s beautifully tended rose garden situated at the entry to the Cellar Door, the perfect way to enjoy what the Hunter Valley is all about – good wines, good company and picturesque surroundings.

Mount Alexander Winery

Mount Alexander Winery is operated by the Blamires family on the north eastern slopes of Mount Alexander in Central Victoria. The vineyard is planted in the sandy granite soils of Sutton Grange which are famed for producing high quality Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. The property and vineyard are dissected by Axe Creek. All grape growing and winemaking practices are designed to maximise quality and allow the strong fruit characteristics to be reflected in the wine. The fruit is hand pruned to target yields of less than 2 tonnes per acre. The fruit is hand picked and delivered directly to the winery for processing where fermentation vats are hand plunged and the marc is basket pressed to maximise the intensity and varietal characteristics of the fruit. Quality oak (all French) is used to store the wine for 12 months before the wine is bottled on site using the winery’s own automatic bottling line. Stelvin closures are used for all wines to ensure the wine quality will be maintained until the day it is opened and enjoyed.
