Eagles Rest Wines is located in the Hunter Valley. Our focus is to create outstanding wines that are true reflection of each individual vineyard site.
The history of the Maluna vineyard is carved from the bedrock of the Brokenback range. The soils, aspect and hydraulic dynamics of this place set it apart from its surrounds. A fact that was not lost on the bloke who bought this place to life.
Frederick Wilkinson, father of Audrey Wilkinson, selected this plot of land for his brother William and together the family developed Maluna along with Coolalta, Mangerton and Oakdale in the late 1860’s. These are all vineyards of significance to this day so one can only assume that ole Frederick had an eye for good grape growing country.
Unfortunately the 1930’s struck the Hunter winemaking community with a vengeance and Maluna passed to the hands of the Phillips family and a new life of grazing country. Not until Don Maxwell, a Sydney doctor, originally of Maitland stock, bought the property in 1968 did Maluna return to its former glory under vine. Many great wines have fruit from the Maluna vineyard in their DNA and none more than the wines of Eagles Rest.
The vision of the current owner has given us the opportunity to let the vineyard express her colours, aromas and flavours like never before. We are humbled by what we have unearthed and indebted to the previous visionaries who laid eyes on this valley within a valley. Their vision, fortitude and persistence has left us with a vinous gem which we intend to cherish.
